Great Atlantic Resources Announces Results of its CARDS Survey -South Quarry Tungsten Property
GREAT ATLANTIC RESOURCES CORP. (TSXV.GR) is pleased to announce that it has received the results of its recently completed CARDS survey (Computer Aided Resource Detection System) technology employed on its South Quarry property in Newfoundland. The purpose of this study was to identify favourable tungsten exploration targets based on the analysis of all available geophysical, downhole and surface data using artificial intelligence and data mining techniques. This technology was developed by DIAGNOS Inc. (“DIAGNOS”) (TSX Venture: ADK), a leader in the use of artificial intelligence and advanced knowledge-extraction techniques.
The CARDS evaluation used data mining techniques to analyze digitally compiled exploration data and identifies target zones with high statistical scores of similarity to known areas of mineralization. The main Tungsten ore minerals of economic importance are wolframite and scheelite. Wolframite and scheelite mineralization in Newfoundland are most commonly found in discrete larger veins as best known in the Grey River area, where one such deposit contains a significant resources. The Grey River area contains multiple tungsten-bearing veins that appear to be genetically associated with the undeformed leucogranties. The South Quarry property contains a tungsten showing which lies within leucocratic granite veins hosted by metagraywackes and limestones of the Davidsville Group. The showing consists of a swarm of scheelite-bearing veins which occur over an area of at least 200 by 300 meters. In addition, drilling in 1985 intersected considerably more limestone than expected, and the showing is considered to have excellent potential for a tungsten skarn deposit.
Twenty four isolated and distinct tungsten targets were identified with five in particular being of highest priority. Most target areas are located in the sandstone/siltstone sequence of the Middle Ordovician and later Davidsville Group. Other target areas are located at the contact between the Davidsville Group and Devonian Patrigeberry Hills Granite Intrusion and the contact between the Davidsville Group and Cambrian to Ordovician submarine volcanic rocks. These target areas may possibly highlight granitic quartz veins, generated by local granite intrusions containing tungsten mineralization as best known along the Grey River area.
The South Quarry Tungsten showing is located in a rock quarry on the east side of the Baie d’Espoir Highway, approximately 7 km south of Berry Hill Pond, Central Newfoundland. This showing consists of a swarm of scheelite-bearing veins covering an area of at least 200 by 300 meters. Where veins have been exposed by stripping, a 200 meter long cross section of the vein swarm revealed veins up to 1.5 m wide and grading 0.3 to 0.4 % WO3. Associated with this occurrence is the stratiform Camp Ten tungsten showing where bedded scheelite occurs within limestone and calcareous sandstone horizons that dip toward the possible source of the mineralization – the Middle Ridge Granite.
